  • Whether you're experiencing a recent injury, persistent discomfort or a problem that's affecting your everyday activities, understanding what's happening is an important first step towards recovery.

  • At High Peak Osteo, we provide osteopathic assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for a wide range of musculoskeletal problems.

  • Our approach combines clinical assessment, clear explanations, hands-on treatment where appropriate and practical rehabilitation to help you move more comfortably and confidently.

What Can an Osteopath Help With?

Osteopaths are regulated healthcare professionals trained to assess and manage problems affecting the muscles, joints and wider musculoskeletal system.

We assess and manage back pain, including acute episodes and longer-standing problems.

Not every symptom is caused by a musculoskeletal condition, and not every problem is appropriate for osteopathic treatment. Part of a thorough assessment is recognising when further investigation, medical advice or referral may be necessary.

what happens at your first appointment?

Your first appointment is an opportunity to understand your symptoms, identify relevant clinical findings and discuss an appropriate way forward.

    1. Understand the problem

We'll begin by discussing your symptoms, medical history and any relevant changes in activity, work or lifestyle.

We'll also explore how the problem is affecting you and what you'd like to achieve.

For some people, that might mean returning to sport. For others, it might simply mean sleeping comfortably, managing a working day or walking without discomfort.

    2. Clinical Assessment

Your assessment may involve examining movement, muscle and joint function, strength and relevant neurological signs.

The tests we use depend on your presentation. There isn't a single assessment routine that is appropriate for everyone.

We'll explain what we find, what we think may be contributing to your symptoms and where uncertainty remains.

    3. Treatment and Advice

If osteopathic treatment is appropriate, we may use hands-on techniques to help manage symptoms and improve comfort with movement.

Treatment is tailored to the individual and may include soft tissue techniques, joint mobilisation and other manual approaches.

However, hands-on treatment isn't always necessary or the most useful intervention.

Advice about activity, exercise, symptom management and rehabilitation may be equally important — and sometimes more important — depending on your condition.

    4. Planning Your Recovery

We'll discuss the next steps together, including what you can do independently and whether any further appointments are likely to be useful.

Our aim is to provide a clear, proportionate plan that reflects your symptoms, goals and preferences.

Our Approach: Understanding, Treatment and Independence

  • At High Peak Osteo, we believe good healthcare should help you understand your condition rather than leave you feeling dependent on repeated treatment.

  • Pain and injury aren't always straightforward. Symptoms can be influenced by physical loading, previous injuries, general health, recovery and other factors.

  • We don't believe every problem has a single identifiable 'root cause', or that every painful joint needs correcting.

  • Instead, we focus on understanding the available clinical evidence, explaining our reasoning and helping you make informed decisions about your recovery.

  • Hands-on treatment can be valuable, particularly for short-term symptom relief, but it's one part of a broader approach.

  • Where appropriate, we use exercise, education and progressive rehabilitation to help you return to meaningful activity and develop confidence in managing your symptoms.

  • Our goal isn't to keep you coming back for appointments. It's to help you reach the point where you no longer need them.
